| By two days from now, things will be back to "normal." By normal, I think I mostly mean blah and boring. But that's life. How will things be normal? Well, I finally have internet again at my apartment (haven't had that since I moved), so I'll be able to waste tons of time reading meaningless crap. The Sox will have lost in the playoffs (it's not normal when they're in the playoffs). I'll have lots of confusing stressful work to do at school--studying for quals wasn't really the same sort of feeling as having a strange class that you hate and don't understand at all. But mostly, the one friend I have here who actually has the energy to stay up past 9 pm to hang out, go places, or sometimes just sit around and talk will be far far away.
Walking into my apartment by myself tonight at 10:45 sure brought on a wave of how immediately this is happening. It felt really familiar in a strange and not exactly good way. Then again, it's not really fair to try to compare this to what someone moving to a different city for a new job could be going through, but still, it's tough to swallow at times. Tonight feels like the first time that it's really hit me this hard.

| For four nights in a row now, I have not been able to sleep well, and it's really getting old. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I just cannot fall asleep until at least 2 am. If I go to bed early at 11, I fall asleep at 2. If I go to bed at midnight or 1, I fall asleep at 2. I'm not drinking caffeine in the evenings, I'm not sleeping in until ridiculous times in the morning, and I'm not going running at 10 pm, so it's not those usual things that used to keep me awake. I just can't turn my brain off. Sometimes it's school stuff, and I can't get my mind out of the study mode that I've been in all day, but a lot of times it's other things that seem really stupid. Last night, I had the song "Why You'd Want to Live Here" by Death Cab for Cutie stuck in my head, and I laid in bed for hours imagining I was playing the guitar and drum parts. I like that song, but it was awful to try to fall asleep and just toss and turn with the same song stuck in my head for that long. Other days this week, I couldn't stop replaying shots in my head from the round of golf I'd played that afternoon. And sometimes, it's just general wondering about lives of me and other people I know. Whatever it is, it always sucks and I getting sick of it because it makes studying all afternoon really hard because I get really sleepy. I took this break to write this in hope that it'll wake me up and give me energy to chug through some thermo problems before a review session this evening.

| Last night I saw possibly the biggest contrast of live musical performances that can be seen in one night. First, I went to the classy Old Town joint Rendezvous on the Grand to see an incredible performance by Sweet Japonic--the place was mostly empty, and Matt said that gives him crazy ideas to play crazy stuff in ways he usually doesn't, so the guitar work was mind-boggling at times, and it was a heck of a lot of fun to see them and hang out with them briefly. After that, I headed down to the somewhat less-than-classy Mac's Bar to see Endless Aisle play a mostly indecipherable set of screaming, cussing (at least I think, I couldn't really tell though), thrashing metal guitar riffs in drop D, and nonstop loud drum fills. It was intense, loud, strange, interesting, and hilarious all at the same time. And I'm pretty sure I played high school baseball again the bass player back in the day. All in all, it was quite a bizarre and entertaining evening, especially when a random guy on a bike started singing at us while we were sitting on a bus-stop bench. He definitely had a better voice than the singer from Endless Aisle.

| We've been having some crazy weather around here the last couple of days. It's been hot and really humid, and every afternoon, huge storms have been blowing up. Yesterday, some really crazy ones came through Lansing, and they did some pretty nasty damage in certain spots of town. I stumbled upon a bunch of the big tree damage while taking a bike ride this afternoon near Moores Park, and I snapped a few quick pictures.
This is a big tree in Moores Park right next to the tennis courts. The stump that's left is about 3 or 4 feet tall.

This is also in Moores Park, near the pool. The trunk of the tree on the ground had to be at least 2 1/2 feet in diameter.
This is the corner of Delevan and Barnes. This tree was blocking almost the entire road.
This is on Sparrow, less than a block away from the basketball courts I played on at recess in elementary school. This huge piece of a tree had fallen right the roof of a Jeep Commander. It doesn't look too bad from this fuzzy picture, but it was damaged pretty badly.
The river trail was completely flooded by the Eckert Power Station across from Moores Park. This is probably about the highest I've ever seen the river through here.
I saw this tree in riverfront park next to the Shiawassee St. bridge on the ride back to my apartment.
And it continues--while I was typing up this entry, we got nailed with another crazy storm with 70 mph winds and possible tornadoes. The sirens were going off all over town and the power flickered off for a bit too. And as quickly as it came, it's gone--I can see sunny sky off to the north west from my window.
| I ran the 5/3 River Bank Run this morning. Well, actually, I could only call what I did from about mile 3 to mile 12 actual running--I jogged slowly for the first three miles (too busy to go faster) and I sputtered and struggled pathetically slowly and through the last 3 miles or so. But anyway, it was still a heck of a long time to be running or jogging or whatever.
To celebrate, I figured it was time to eat some solid junk food for dinner. I went to Rally's and got this and downed it with two icy cold cans of Coca-Cola:

Since they were 2 for $4, I had to get two and eat them both. Mmmm.
So one of two things could happen tomorrow. I'll either be completely immobile because of my burning knees and quads and hamstrings, or I'll be even more completely immobile because I'll have a massive heart attack. oh well, whatever.
